![]() Like many fast-growing trees, Norfolk Island pine has a limited period of time that it is likely to perform well as a houseplant that, sadly, should be anticipated. It is a mature Norfolk Pine, and it slowly continues to grow, displaying its true characteristics. The long needled leaves cascading from its branches, give it a majestic look. It doesn’t look anything like the plant you would see in stores at Christmas time. Most gardeners end up dissatisfied with the results and dispose of their plants. The Norfolk Island Pine is one of my favourite plants we have in our home. That is possible to do but the tree will no longer have the delicate end growth. To maintain the plant's natural shape, you would need to regularly remove growth from the lateral branches in a graduated fashion. Norfolk Island Pine or Araucaria heterophylla is a houseplant that can usually be found easily around Christmas Time. If you cut off the top of a Norfolk Island pine, it will stop growth from that point. Much of the plant's appeal relates to its wonderful symmetry. Its fast rate of growth can create a problem as this houseplant can quickly outgrow its space in the home. Pruning is not a good solution. ![]() Norfolk Island pine ( Araucaria heterophylla) is a popular indoor conifer. In the wild it can mature to 200 feet tall, but it stays much smaller indoors, growing about 6 inches a year.
